How we are funded

By readers. There is no advertising on this site, no sponsored content, and no arrangement under which anyone can pay to appear on the front page. When we are wrong we say so, at the top of the piece, in the same type size as the original claim.

A newspaper that cannot be embarrassed by its own corrections column is not a newspaper.

Who we are

Twelve reporters and four editors, working from Hanoi, Osaka, Lisbon and Leipzig. Our correspondents file in their own language and are edited in it — a story is translated after it is right, never before.

Corrections

Write to the editor. Every correction we make is logged, dated and kept: the archive is not quietly rewritten.
